About the Director
Kevin Heathwood graduated from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with a Bachelor's of Music Education degree and from Columbia University with a Master of Arts degree.
In January 2011, Mr. Heathwood was appointed as the band director of Middle School 180. In his time as band director at MS 180, the program launched its first concert band program in nearly 20 years, and has now grown to encompass two concert bands and a jazz ensemble. Prior to his appointment at Middle School 180, Mr. Heathwood has taught at Harrison High School, in Westchester, Hampton Bays Middle School, on Long Island, and overseas at Westlake Boys High School in Auckland New Zealand. Mr. Heathwood has been an active member in the music education community including authoring and publishing curriculum resources, adjudicating music festivals, attending conferences, and leading workshops. Mr. Heathwood holds professional memberships in the National Association for Music Education and the New York State School Music Association, where he works as a state adjudicator. He is an active performer and plays shows throughout New York City. He is the a member of the Róisín Dubh Irish Pipe Band, a Grade 3 bagpipe band based out of AOH Div. 7 in East Islip, NY. Along with other music teachers in the city, he is a founding member of the band the Style where he is the lead singer and guitarist. |
